Avoid rental scams
Warning signs and precautions to help you avoid being scammed.
Golden rule. Never pay before visiting. Beware of unusually low rents and 'abroad' landlords. Always use a traceable payment method.
Warning signs
- Rent that is unusually low compared with the local market.
- A landlord who says they are abroad and refuses all viewings.
- A request for a bank transfer, money order or prepaid cards before signing.
- Generic photos or photos reused from other listings.
- Pressure to pay immediately to reserve the property.
Sensible precautions
- Visit the property, or ask someone you trust to visit it for you.
- Ask for a written lease and a dated, signed inventory.
- Only use traceable payment methods.
- Verify the landlord's identity and check that the documents are consistent.
If in doubt
Do not pay anything and report the listing to the relevant platform. A genuine rental offer should not require payment before a viewing and a contract.
